With Holtab’s solution, Norwegian railways could increase traffic

When the Norwegian railway administration, Bane NOR, needed help to increase traffic along the important Gjøvik line north of Oslo, Holtab collaborated and delivered a mobile switching station.

Just over 10 kilometres north of Oslo, Bane NOR needed a switching station. The station, which was to be located in Gjøvik, would be mobile in order to be able to be moved in the future.

“The fact that we were to deliver the project in accordance with Norwegian requirements and regulations made our work a little extra exciting and challenging,” says Linus Olofsson, project manager at Holtab.

Eitech was the customer
To create a switchgear that would distribute the power via outgoing lines to different overhead line sections, the contractor Eitech chose to work with Holtab. The task was to develop a high-quality product in a cost-effective manner.

The plant was to be designed and built in Tingsryd and then transported to Gjøvik, Norway. Eitech provided the switchgear, while Holtab delivered the building and carried out the installations.

Contributes to a good working environment
For Eitech, it is extremely worthwhile to have the stations completed and functionally tested in Holtab’s workshop. There are several reasons for this.

"In addition to the outcome being high quality, there are major benefits when it comes to health and safety. Being on site for a short time also results in minimal disruption to other contractors operating at the same site," says Karl-Jörgen Mathiasson, unit manager at Infra kraft at Eitech Engineering.

"Together, we have created a smart facility that is both cost-effective and of the highest quality. The fact that we built it on site here in Tingsryd was a major advantage and contributed to smooth production," says Linus Olofsson.

The Challenge

A switchgear was to be delivered to the railways in Norway in compliance with Norwegian requirements. It needed to be mobile and meet high functional and quality targets.

The solution

Holtab constructed a compact building containing 11 switchgear compartments. It had a separate room for control equipment, with a total of 7 cabinets. It was only 13.55 metres long and 3.5 metres wide.

Result

After the plant was completed at the factory in Tingsryd, it was transported to Norway. Norway's rail administration, Bane NOR, is satisfied with the facility, which is currently used by the railway. Eitech has a stake in three similar facilities.
